Downlights vs. reflector bulbs
There are two ways to update a recessed can. An LED downlight replaces the visible trim and light source in one piece, giving a clean, finished look. Alternatively, keeping the can and screwing in an LED BR or PAR bulb is quicker but leaves the old trim in place. Downlights are often chosen when trims are discolored or when a property wants a consistent look across many rooms.
Picking a size
Size follows the ceiling opening. 4" downlights suit smaller openings and accent areas, while 5"/6" downlights fit the most common recessed can size and are used for general lighting. Measure the inside diameter of the existing cans before ordering.
