Photometric & IES Lighting Planning in Indianapolis

Compare a proposed lighting layout before committing to fixture positions. Edge LED Lighting uses manufacturer IES information where appropriate to inform commercial fixture selection and expected coverage, not to promise identical field results.

What IES-based planning can and cannot tell you

An IES file describes a fixture's tested light distribution in a format that can be used for photometric modeling. Combined with site geometry and mounting details, it can help estimate how a proposed layout distributes illumination. This is different from a fixture specification listing only lumens or wattage.

Despite this page's historical /ies-testing address, our planning service does not imply that Edge operates a photometric testing laboratory or certifies manufacturer files. We use available product data as a planning input. Modeling is considered when it adds value; not every proposal includes AGi32 work or any particular software deliverable.

01 / Project considerations

Useful inputs make a useful layout

Plans, dimensions, mounting heights and proposed fixture models help establish a starting point. Rack heights, ceilings, overhangs and neighboring surfaces can affect where light reaches. Interior models may need room-surface assumptions; exterior models may need property boundaries and areas where spill should be reviewed.

The IES file should correspond to the proposed fixture configuration, including its optics and relevant output information. A file from a similar-looking model is not automatically interchangeable. Incomplete geometry or product information introduces uncertainty, which should be discussed before relying on the comparison.

  • Correct fixture model and optical configuration
  • Task areas, boundaries and modeling assumptions

02 / Project considerations

Coverage and uniformity, not just the average

An average illumination value can hide dark areas or strong contrast. A layout review can compare expected values across a calculation area, fixture spacing and distribution. Relevant targets depend on the space and tasks; we do not prescribe one foot-candle level for every warehouse, office or exterior site.

For warehouses, rack aisles and pick areas need consideration alongside open floors. For parking lots, vehicle routes and pedestrian areas may need review alongside the property edge. Glare involves viewing direction and fixture position as well as output; a simple calculation grid is not a complete guarantee of visual comfort.

  • Calculation areas appropriate to the actual tasks
  • Expected distribution, minimum values and contrast
  • Viewing directions, glare and exterior light spill

Use the model to inform a practical proposal

Modeling can help compare fixture options or identify layout changes before installation. We discuss which questions the analysis is intended to answer and what information or deliverables are included. Some projects need a detailed layout; a limited fixture replacement may need a different planning approach.

Actual conditions can differ because of installation positions, surface reflectance, obstructions, maintenance and equipment performance. Modeled values are estimates, not guaranteed foot-candle results or a compliance certification. Our in-house installation team coordinates the agreed lighting work with attention to site access and the proposed layout.

From your facility to a practical plan

  1. STEP 01

    Share the layout question

Tell us which areas need review and provide dimensions, plans, mounting details or accessible photos.

  2. STEP 02

    Confirm planning inputs

Review the fixture data, geometry and assumptions needed to compare suitable options.

  3. STEP 03

    Review proposed coverage

Discuss modeled distribution where appropriate, limitations and the fixture or layout decisions it informs.

  4. STEP 04

    Coordinate the agreed work

Connect the proposal to site access and installation planning with our in-house installation team.

Questions before you begin

Does every Edge proposal include an AGi32 layout?

No. Photometric modeling and any specific deliverables depend on the project and agreed planning scope. We consider IES-based analysis where it helps answer fixture-count, spacing or coverage questions, not as a universal inclusion.

Do you perform laboratory IES testing?

This service concerns planning using manufacturer IES files, not laboratory testing or certification of fixtures. The historical page address is retained, but it should not be read as a claim that Edge operates a testing laboratory.

Will the installed light levels exactly match the model?

Not necessarily. Geometry, reflectance, obstructions, mounting positions and equipment conditions can differ from the assumptions. Modeled results are planning estimates and do not guarantee field measurements or compliance outcomes.

Can a layout tell us how many fixtures we need?

It can help compare counts and spacing where adequate product and site information is available. Mounting height, distribution, tasks and obstructions matter, so square footage or a lumen total alone is not a reliable fixture-count method.

What information should we send first?

Start with your facility address, the areas being considered and available dimensions or plans. Include mounting heights, rack or canopy details and existing fixture information if known. We can discuss which additional inputs are needed for the proposed planning scope.
