Exterior lighting / Entrances, walls & loading areas

Building Exterior LED Lighting in Indianapolis

Give entrances, walkways and loading areas a site-specific lighting plan. Edge LED Lighting evaluates exterior fixtures and coordinates commercial upgrades with our in-house installation team, with attention to coverage, mounting and neighboring properties.

Light the building's useful spaces, not every surface equally

A dark entrance, poorly lit service door or bright fixture shining toward a neighbor can all signal that an exterior layout needs review. Building-mounted lighting serves a different role from pole lights across a parking lot: mounting positions are tied to walls, doors, canopies and the activities immediately around the building.

We start with the routes people use and where deliveries, access or after-hours activity occur. Existing wall fixtures may be retained in a suitable retrofit or replaced with a different distribution. Adding brightness without reviewing direction and mounting can leave the original problem unresolved.

01 / Project considerations

Wall packs, shielding and fixture selection

Wall packs and suitably specified flood lighting can serve different exterior areas. Full-cutoff or shielded options may help direct light downward, depending on the fixture optics and mounting. We compare distribution rather than assume a particular fixture shape will control glare in every position.

Selected fixtures need suitable outdoor and environmental ratings for their locations. Exposure to rain, building drainage, temperature conditions and mounting surfaces affects specification. Available model data, voltage requirements and any controls should be checked before procurement; not every catalog item has the same rating or capability.

  • Mounting height, orientation and wall construction
  • Outdoor suitability and fixture distribution
  • Shielding, controls and neighboring windows

02 / Project considerations

Entrances, loading docks and pedestrian routes

Light at a door should support the approach as well as the threshold. Recessed entries, steps and overhangs can create shadows that an existing wall fixture does not address. We review canopy coverage, walkway geometry and how people transition between interior and exterior lighting.

Loading docks require attention to trailers, overhead doors and active work zones. A fixture can be bright at the wall yet provide limited light where handling occurs. Where the layout warrants it, IES-based planning can compare distribution, obstructions and expected coverage. Modeled results do not guarantee visibility or security outcomes.

  • Door recesses, canopies and changes in level
  • Trailer positions and dock activity
  • Glare toward drivers and spill at property boundaries

03 / Project considerations

Existing wiring, access and control arrangements

Exterior upgrades may involve lift access, wall penetrations, removal of old fixtures and review of existing circuits. We discuss what is accessible, what information is missing and which conditions need closer evaluation. Lighting recommendations do not establish that existing wiring or structural supports are suitable without review.

Photocells, time scheduling or other compatible controls may be appropriate depending on operating hours and fixture selection. Our in-house installation team coordinates the agreed lighting work with your property contact; loading activity, vehicles and public access affect how work zones are arranged.

  • Lift routes, surface condition and mounting supports
  • Existing electrical conditions and control wiring
  • Deliveries, tenant access and work-zone coordination

From your facility to a practical plan

  1. STEP 01

    Share the exterior concerns

Provide the site address, photos, fixture locations and the doors or routes needing attention.

  2. STEP 02

    Evaluate coverage & access

Review mounting, distribution, neighboring spaces and installation access; model the layout where appropriate.

  3. STEP 03

    Review suitable options

Compare fixtures, control arrangements and the defined installation scope, including any program questions.

  4. STEP 04

    Coordinate the work

Plan site access and work zones with your contact and our in-house installation team.

Questions before you begin

Is building exterior lighting the same as parking lot lighting?

No. Building-mounted fixtures usually serve entrances, walls, walkways and dock areas. Parking lot pole lights serve wider vehicle and pedestrian areas. The systems may need to be planned together, but their mounting, distribution and installation requirements differ.

Will a full-cutoff wall pack eliminate light spill?

It can be a useful option, but orientation, output, mounting height and site geometry still matter. We review the proposed distribution and neighboring spaces. No fixture label alone guarantees that unwanted spill or glare will be eliminated.

Can the existing wall mounts and wiring be reused?

That depends on their condition and compatibility with the proposed fixture. Mounting surfaces, junction arrangements, voltage and weather exposure need evaluation. Any required adaptations should be identified in the project scope.

What information helps with an exterior lighting quote?

Share daytime site photos, existing fixture details, mounting heights if known and the areas that concern you after dark. Note delivery schedules and access restrictions. Start with the information you have; further site review may be needed before a proposal is finalized.
