Security Camera Wiring & Networking

The cable is what lets a camera work. We plan, run and terminate camera-focused cabling and connect it to the agreed switch or recording location, then check that each camera connects.

Camera cabling, not general IT

This service is focused on the cabling and connections your security cameras need. It covers planning cable paths, running and terminating cable, and connecting cameras to the agreed connection point. It is not full-building enterprise network management, internet service, WiFi design, security monitoring or cybersecurity.

Camera systems vary. The right cable, power method and connection hardware depend on the cameras selected and any existing or proposed recording equipment, so we confirm those details for each project rather than assume one standard approach.

01 / Project considerations

Structured cabling for camera runs

Many IP cameras connect using Cat5e or Cat6 Ethernet cable. The choice depends on the equipment, run lengths and the building. Cable paths are planned to avoid damage and unnecessary length, supported along their route and labeled so each run can be identified later.

  • Cat5e or Cat6 where suited to the equipment
  • Planned routes and run lengths
  • Supported, protected cable paths
  • Labeled terminations at both ends

02 / Project considerations

Power over Ethernet where compatible

PoE can deliver power and data over one cable when the cameras and the switch or recorder support it. Where it does not fit the equipment or distance, other power arrangements may be needed. We review compatibility during planning instead of promising PoE on every project.

  • Camera and switch PoE compatibility
  • Power budget considerations for the device
  • Distance limits for a single run
  • Alternatives when PoE is not suitable

03 / Project considerations

Switch and recorder connection considerations

Camera cables usually end at a network switch, a recorder or a combination of both. We review the connection requirements for any existing or proposed recording equipment and coordinate with whoever manages your network if cameras will share it. Configuration of recording software, remote access and network security remains with your equipment provider or IT contact unless agreed otherwise.

After installation, we check basic connectivity so each camera is connected before handoff.

  • Location of the switch or recording equipment
  • Coordination with your IT contact
  • Available ports and rack or wall space
  • Basic connectivity testing on each run

What this service covers

Exact scope, equipment and cable types are confirmed for each project after reviewing the site and any existing or proposed recording equipment.

Questions before you begin

Do you use Cat6 for every installation?

No single cable is used on every project. Cat5e or Cat6 may be appropriate depending on the cameras, distances and building; we confirm the choice during planning.

Will my cameras use PoE?

PoE is common where the cameras and switch or recorder support it. We check compatibility and power needs before relying on it.

Do you set up our business network or WiFi?

No. Our networking work is limited to the cabling and connections needed for the cameras. Building-wide networks, WiFi and internet service are separate.

Can you connect cameras to our existing recorder?

We can review the connection requirements for your existing or proposed recording equipment. Compatibility depends on the hardware and is confirmed before the scope is set.
